Online discussion

Online discussion

I personally have no strong feeling about the online discussion. Sometimes I know how to write the sentence from observing others' grammar rules. However, most of the time, we just wait the next question. Therefore, I think it would be funny if we can discuss a sentence with lots of mistakes so that everyone knows how to answer it clearly. It' s a little tired we only talk about what the compound sentence is. Therefore, if we have chance to do online discussion next time, we can combine the grammar with the real sentence. Then we can learn both at the same time.

Final peer-comment

Final peer-comment

About the peer-comment, I think it is a good way to train our English ability. However, when we wrote the peer-comment, it also droved us crazy. There are some opinions about writing peer-comment. First, I can read friends' articles via writing peer-comment. They wrote things happened in our daily life. When I read their article, I could recall the funny things had happened. Second, when we found out the mistakes in friends' articles, we could also improve our grammar skill. We will notice that we can' t make the same mistake and avoid the unnecessary mistakes when writing. Through checking the grammar rules at the website, we can discover the grammar rules that we forgot or haven' t learned it yet. The last point is my feeling during the process of writing peer-comment. It took lots of time to finish it. Sometimes I would go crazy when found out the mistake, looked at the website, and wrote the comment at the same time. It was so busy when writing the peer-comment. However, I still think it makes my writing ability get better. Also, I seldom make the mistakes at the grammar parts. Therefore, I think it' s helpful to write peer-comment.

Impressions

Impressions

After reading the poem The Iliad, I think it teaches me lots of things. First, it shows me what the epic is and the characteristic. To my opinion, this is a brilliant poem, and it mentions a lot of god, goddess, people and stories. It's amazing that a poem can content so many things and most importantly, it won't confuse you. Also, you can see every character's personality very clearly from the conversations. Second, I learn a valuable view of life. We should always try to make the right decision, or we will suffer a lot in the rest of our life. For example, Paris, who was the prince of Troy, decided to give the "Golden Apple" to Aphrodite, and then make the Trojan War break out. Achilles who was the best solider among the Greeks, and he refused to fight for Agamemnon. Hence, his friend died for him and he was also killed in the later war. As a result, The Iliad reminds us an important moral that we sometimes forget, "Look before you leap." Last of all, we can see ancient peoples' wisdom, and observe what they did and apply to our daily life. Moreover, we can improve our knowledge and elevate our mind by reading the master piece. Therefore, I highly recommend The Iliad, the remarkable poem in the history of literature.

The Conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles

The Conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles

People like Paris and Menelaus would continue and join the fight because of Helen. However, for Achilles or Agamemnon, the only purpose they joined the war was that they could get the prize or everything from the loser. Later, we are going to discuss about the quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles.

At fist book of The Iliad, it describes about that sun of god, Apollo brought plague to Greek for Agamemnon capturing the priest's daughter, Chryseis. The priest said if Agamemnon could take the ransom and set her daughter free then he would pray to Apollo to stop the plague. Nevertheless, Agamemnon persisted on keeping his girl even Achilles came to persuade him. Agamemnon told to Achilles impolitely, "If you gave me your girl then I would consider giving him his daughter." When you read there, you may feel confused why they insisted to keep their girl which is the prize. We have mentioned this before, the reason they joined to the Trojan War was they could get some interests. The prize was what they came for, so they wouldn't give it up easily. Then, Achilles was very angry to hear that, and of course, he denied it. What's more, Achilles said to Agamemnon that if he wouldn't give the girl back then he would withdraw the war. As he made this childish decision, his life becomes miserable in the end.

Because of withdrawing from the war, Achilles' friends Patroclus acted like him and fight for him. Unfortunately, Patroclus was killed by Hector, Paris' brother. This news made Achilles crazy angry, and he returned to the war then killed the Hector. But no sooner, Achilles was also killed by Paris terribly. Due to his decision, so many things happened, and also made him walk to the path of death.

The War in The Iliad

The War in The Iliad

Helen was ever considered "the face that launched a thousand ships" Everyone who had ever seen her would be attracted. She is the cause of the war between Greek and Troy. But the most important reason was Paris' decision in goddess' contest. Now that we have the general idea, then, let's continue to read the content.

Paris, prince of Troy went to Greek to negotiate with the king of Sparta, Menelaus about the peace between two countries. However, as Paris saw Menelaus' wife, Helen, he was deeply attracted by her. Paris totally forgot everything, because the only thing he remembers was how to make Helen become his wife. Then he didn't care about the peace between two countries and took Helen away from her husband, her child. As we can know, the war between Greek and Troy broke out. There is still a mystery we don't understand. Did Helen go Troy with Paris willingly? Or because of Aphrodite's power, then it's easy for Paris taking her away? Maybe it's important, may it's not. I think that should be the most charming part of the literature, because we can have room for imagination.

This fight lasted ten years long. The king around Greece and Troy also joined to the war for some reasons. The next article we will talk about the best solider Achilles and the conflict between Greek commanders in chief Agamemnon.

The Story Behind The Iliad

The story behind The Iliad

In The Iliad, book began with nine years of fighting between Greek and Trojans. Before finding out the cause of this war, we need to read a story first. From this story, your will understand why they fought with each other and the later conflict between Achilles and Agamemnon.

Long time ago, God Zeus held a banquet about the marriage of Peleus and Thetis who were Achilles' parents. However, there was a goddess named Eris who was not invited. She was so angry, so she wanted to break this banquet. Eris threw a "Golden Apple" and said "to the most fair". As a result, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all thought this apple should belong to them. Then Zeus decided to let the prince of Troy, Paris to judge which goddess was qualified to have the apple. Every goddess offered good condition to convinced Paris. In the end, Paris gave the apple to Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, because Aphrodite promised to give him the most beautiful girl, Helen in the world. Though Paris' decision made him win the beautiful girl in the world, it killed thousands of people and broke the peace between Greece and Troy.

Now, you can realize the cause of war is a beautiful girl who named Helen. We always say that's Helen's fault, because she is too beautiful. However, do we really think of the original problem? If Paris didn't make the decision, the war between two countries might not happen. That's a good issue for us to think about. Then, after reading the story, we will see what's happened in the war.

Introduction about the Topic

Introduction

In the beginning, I'd like to express the reason to choose this topic. In the class of English Literature, we have discussed about the Homer's brilliant epics recently. When we went through The Iliad and The Odyssey, those two master pieces really fascinated me, especially The Iliad. Its background stories and the extended content are very incredible. Therefore, I want to talk more about this poem and let you know what my feeling is after read it. That's the reason why I chose this topic.

As you start to read The Iliad, you will find the real meaning of the poem is not easy to understand. I also suffered a lot when I studied it, because the words and the stories were complicated. But I had to thank to my teacher for explaining the meaning and the relations very clearly. After I understood it, I fell in love with the poem and had so many reactions. Why Greek and Trojans would fight with each other? Why Achilles' life would become so miserable in the end? Why the god in the poem could be so different? Those questions made me go through The Iliad again and again.

As a result, in the following articles I want to share with you about this great epic. I will introduce you the poem and the background story so that you will realize how charming it is. So, let's take a journey to Greece and Troy.
